La Dispute tour

Postby danjonesdj » Tue Jan 24, 2012 11:43 pm

First date kicked off tonight in London.

Absolutely top notch, yet again. New stuff sounds huge live (A Letter and Edward Benz were stunning), despite a few complaints from the audience. It was also a pretty short set (just under an hour?), full of mostly new songs- setlist is no different from earlier dates on the tour.

Only caught the end of Former Thieves, but they sounded great.

Looking forward to Bristol tonight. Interested in checking out Former Thieves even though I haven't listened to them much on record.

I thought they were really good, it just felt like they played a LOT of new stuff though. I'll reserve proper judgement until the Kingston show.

Instrumentally I thought they were superb but their vocalist really struggles to keep up sometimes. His voice wavered or cracked too much during the Wildlife material (which is obviously written to make him very prominent) and was quite often too weak to make itself heard above the maelstrom during the older numbers. I was also surprised that out of the abundance of new material they played (8, 9, maybe even 10 tracks out of a total 12 or 13?) they didn't find room for King Park which undoubtedly would have elicited one of the biggest singalongs of the night.

Apparently it's too 'emotionally draining' for their vocalist.

Funny because the issues I mentioned were definitely noticeable from the first song. I don't mean to sound too derisory though; as I said in terms of musicianship they were stellar and the set was still punctuated with the odd great moment.

I don't understand how they play 'I See Everything' and don't find that 'emotionally draining'. I didn't really enjoy myself last night, I'm not even going to the Kingston show now, which I had a ticket to. I was quite .. bored.

Agreed; I wasn't overly excited by the set either. If I couldn't drive there in 20 minutes I'd be flogging my Kingston tickets too.

Didn't know &U&I were supporting as well last night which was a nice surprise. Former Thieves were alright and even though I agree with the vocals not being the strongest at times, La Dispute were great.

8)

Wildlife is great but really can't imagine it transcending live as well as the stuff from the first album, so yeah, pretty disappointing setlist - esp. with the lack of King Park and Damaged Goods, I wanna lose my shit, man.

No Damaged Goods? Tits. Not too worried about King Park not being on there tbh.. Really can't leave this show too damaged...

Kingston was brilliant, set was Wildlife heavy but I was very happy about that, hopefully next tour more people will know the words/move more for those songs. Sound mix at the cocks wasnt the best but still great to here those tracks live. King Park would have made it though, they really need to play that live over here at some point

what is the reason for lack of king park? is it because vocally it's demanding?

This, pretty much. Lost it to a couple of tracks, must be said.

Plus it might have been the Cocks poor sound tonight but I got the feeling from Former Thieves that the whole set was the same song repeated with little tweaks made each time. They bored me, must be said.

As We Sink though impressed me a lot. Definitely going to keep an eye on them.
