Makes more sense if this was just a diet and exercise thread because often people want to talk about them together and do the whole losing weight and getting fit thing together. And then there's diet and nutrition for particular fitness programs that people ask about and talk about in here.

Is that not a sweeping generalisation? I know by participating in sport I'm more likely to know people who are less likely to be bothered about their weight as they're mostly fairly fit already, but I just assumed that most fit people are fit and do exercise and most unfit people aren't - and it's those guys who are more inclined to diet and despite a 1 month gym membership also far more likely to lose interest in exercise.

I'd always kind of assumed that dieting and fitness were fairly separate? Despite some well intentioned overlap.

The sports nutrition thing is fairly interesting in any case, it's just dull as fuck reading about what food people have decided to exclude from their diet this week.

Sports nutrition I am extremely interested in, the notion of it it being used to help a person peak is something I can read about all day. The idea of dieting to lose weight is not something I am interested in as every man and their dog are banging on about it all the time.

However it was a bit of a joke in relation to a Scottish football thread as it keeps turning up and hijacking pages of the thread.

Does batter have loads of carbs in it? She could live the life of a king on battered sausage all day every day as that is full of saturated fat which is awesome for you.

I'm just going by what I've seen being talked about in this thread. I've often seen people come in here asking about diet and exercise to lose weight and/or to be generally more fit and healthy. And regardless of how much I talk about diet I've never once been the person who brought it up.

I know you're being hilarious but if you actually went and read about how the lipid hypothesis is full of bullshit you'd realise how dumb you sound. But no, you're not interested, you just want to take the piss out of something you know fuck all about.

HEY EVERYONE, I HAVE A FITNESS QUESTION! Sort of.

Has anyone learnt to swim as a grown up? I'm thinking I might take some lessons, possibly. Maybe. I have no idea, I don't know what the best course of action is because the thought of showing up to a class and having to get in the water makes me want to fearbarf.

My old gym used to do lots of one to one swimming lessons for adult beginners, they looked really good and encouraging, particularly with people who had never been in a pool before... looks like they did lots of theory-type classes too in the build up for those who were particularly nervous.

Pretty gutted I didn't take my swimming stuff to the alternative olympics session I went to on saturday - they had a pint-athalon. Swim 2 lengths of their pool and down a pint after length 1. Winner won membership at the club for a year. I would have smashed it.

I think I'd need to do at least one individual lesson just to get me into the water before I tried to go in with other people.

My gym runs beginners courses but a few people in my office went and said that everyone (themselves included) already knew how to swim, but to get onto the swimming development courses they needed to either be able to swim four lengths or do the beginners class. If everyone is there to develop rather than to learn from scratch, I can't see that I'm going to get much support. Shame I'm going to have to look at going to a different pool, because I'd get a discounted rate at my own gym.

You are the person that can't let it drop when someone disagrees with you about it though, I'm not saying you are wrong particularly, but I also don't think you are right in all cases either. Your diet and ethos to it flat out wouldn't work for me for example and wouldn't for everyone in this thread and isn't the best way to lose weight for everyone, your diet also isn't the most healthy for everyone just like my routine or diet wouldn't work for everyone hence why I usually give advice then say to people check it out and see how it goes for you, then if it isn't right start looking at changing it or tweaking it for your own personal needs.

Didn't say it had to be, it's just a bit boring as the argument is at a stalemate and it could just be dropped now.

Any good coach will tailor and help you out with your own needs though. Everyone knew how to swim out of the people you know who went, that doesn't mean it won't be good for a total novice who needs telling what to do from scratch. I wouldn't discount it till you have tried it as they could be brilliant.

I'll make some enquiries at local pools about the cost and the format of classes. I'll only get more scared the longer I leave it. I can always try some individual classes then go along to the group ones at my gym when I'm less of a coward.

I also need to keep it a secret from pretty much everyone I know, as in the past I've said I might learn and just had them all tell me how easy it is, that I could probably just go to a pool and figure it out, or just go "EH, WHY CAN'T YOU SWIM???" like that might be in any way helpful.

If you throw an adult in water, they'll just start swimming automatically. Or is that babies? or dogs?

Well to be fair, when someone comes in the thread looking for weight loss advice you give the same old 'low calorie low fat' advice every time. When I see that being recommended I feel kinda compelled to offer a counter suggestion.

I keep hearing how what I suggest isn't healthy but I've not heard a reasoned (or even unreasoned) argument as to why that's the case, no matter how many times I've asked. It's just unhealthy. Full stop. You also say to avoid sugar, which of course I agree with but the thing is, every carbohydrate is sugar. Some might take longer to break down in the digestive system but even that brown pasta still ends up as glucose. No one needs to overload their bloodstream with sugar no matter how much exercise you do, yet the standard western diet does exactly that.

Anyway I'm sorry for not reacting well to your piss taking. I usually ignore that stuff. It's just that while you could maybe discuss sports nutrition until the cows come home, I'm similarly interested in general nutrition and its effects on health and body fat. I don't see why there can't be room for all of our interests, especially when someone specifically asks for diet advice.

The standard western diet is a disgrace, I don't think most people would recommend it.

Also, a slight reservation I have about your high fat theory is when it is combined with exercise, periods of anaerobic in particular, due to Anerobic pushing and in some parts making lacerations in your veins and arteries, to then have a high amount of fat circulating through those areas which can get clogged into those lacerations is not good for health or performance.

Basically, I am not an athlete by any stretch of the imagination, I do consider myself to be athletic though and for the sports I am involved in, I highly doubt any of them have a high fat-low carb approach, and since some of these people I look up to are world champions in their field I tend to imagine their approach good so is something I tailor/scale to my own needs as I obviously don't work as hard or spend nearly as much time on my body as they do.

I also do lose and maintain my weight and fitness on such a diet.

well, i got as far as talking to my GP and he said told me that the best way to lose weight is very gradually, as not only is it easier to ease into, it's easier to maintain once you reach the desired weight. his basic outline was:

stick to 2000 calories a day.
drink fizzy water to combat hunger.
think "do i need this" before i put any food in my mouth (relating to snacks).
smaller portions.
keep up the exercise.

and then the odd few tips like "as a rough approximation, one less slice of bread per day equates to a stone lost in a year" and "it's better not to eat a snack than to eat it and think "i'll exercise this off later"." he showed me the photo on his ID from nearly 2 years ago and said he'd lost 4 stone (and to be honest it looked like he'd lost more than that) in that time by following the same guidelines.

i realise he was probably thinking i'd be wasting the dietician's time given that i don't have any actual health issues relating to my weight and was trying to talk me out of seeing one, but to be quite honest, the things he's listed would all be improvements on my current diet, so i figure i'll try them anyway. hell, i went straight to asda and bought a massive multipack of bottled fizzy water after i left haha!

Diet comes under fitness, if you don't like it, don't read it. It's a simple piece of advice, applicable to many posts and threads.

Know what else sort of comes under fitness? Smoking, and me stopping it. I quit once before and that time I quiet for about 5 years, so I reckon I'll probably do a good job of it again. Before I cut down, I'm just guna try and go cold turkey this time. No patches or bullshit, just willpower and a lot of chewing gum.

I'm not sure what it is you're taking issue with there. It's perfectly sound English. You can just dislike the phrase, that's fine, but it's perfect English. Please bear that in mind should you feel the need to explain further why you dislike the phrase.
