Rage Against The Machine’s Tim Commerford forms new band Wakrat

By Dave Bull

Rage Against The Machine bassist Tim Commerford has formed new power trio Wakrat who are currently working on their debut album. Commerford, who sings and plays bass, is joined by drummer Mathias Wakrat and guitarist Laurent Grangeon. They met through Zack de la Rocha at Wakrat’s restaurant.

“We both just share the same enthusiasm for riding mountain bikes,” Commerford said. “We’d talk for many hours about mountain biking and one day, he was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I play drums’.”

Commerford reveals that writing the song ‘Knucklehead’ was very cathartic: “I’ve been dealing with some very deep, dark family stuff in the last year, stuff that left me in tears. I spent a lot of time crying in the last year and feeling trapped and alone. That’s what ‘Knucklehead’ is about. Sometimes the dark side spawns incredible things, and the music came from that.”

Wakrat are a hardcore punk ball of energy. Their first video for ‘Knucklehead’ is a dizzying display of funky bass and bad ass beats can be checked out below. Watch this space for more information on their debut album.
