Experience the Purple live spectacular in their ‘Backbone’ video

By Ben Tipple

Purple’s ‘(409)’ debut presented a mesmerising blend of sun-kissed surf, bubblegum pop, riotous rock and roll and a finishing wedge of gritty punk, and boy was it good. With ‘Bodacious’, the follow-up to their 2014 introduction, things aren’t slowing down. Their pre-release singles ‘Minivan’ and ‘Bliss’ have already showcased differing sides to the band’s sound, a hint of the bittersweet fire running all the way through their new album. ‘Backbone’, taken from the record, sees Purple at their most vibrant.

“You’ve got to get a backbone,” drumming vocalist Hanna Brewer sings to herself on the equally twee and immediate chorus. Bubbling with an excitable atmosphere the track’s video mirrors the vibe, with Purple performing at Swan Dive in their hometown of Austin, Texas, veiled under hazy purple lights. Their attention-grabbing style is undeniable, their uncompromising cool shining through both the track and video.

‘Bodacious’ is available now in the United States, and from the 29th July across the rest of the world via Play It Again Sam.
