Arthur Walwin – ‘Sleepless’

By Jess Tagliani

Despite having been in pop rock bands Paige and Young Classics, vocalist and all-round musician Arthur Walwin has taken a step back from that scene with his newest album, and is instead embracing the straight-up pop and electronic dance world.

It’s been a work in progress; after two years, ‘Sleepless’ will finally see the world this month. It’s a showcase of how hard Arthur Walwin has been working, and how dedicated he is to his art; it’s been two years of perfecting his art, and his sound.

Opening track ‘White Wine’ immediately gives a taste of what’s to come throughout this album. Upbeat synths combine with electronic beats to create a dance-fuelled track, while he blends catchy melodies and bouncy hooks to create kooky tracks, such as ‘Bad’.

Standout track ‘Hard to Love’ comes with guest vocals, courtesy of London-based alternative hip-hop artist Refraze. The difference in genres between both artists creates a striking contrast, and adds depth and layers to this already fun track. It provides a breath of fresh air, and is one that will definitely be championed by radio stations in the near future.

‘Again & Again’ is a slower, more chilled out track, but the tempo is notched up once again during ‘This Feels Like Summer’, which is a truly feel-good track, and is one that needs to be listened to on long road trips. The lyrics are reminiscent of that rush of adrenaline when meeting someone new, with lines such as, “So take me back to feeling like my legs are giving up tonight” – quite appropriate for this sunny season.

‘Sleepless’ is an excellent example of someone who’s got his fingers in all the pies, but hasn’t ruined them whatsoever. It’s astounding to think that this whole album was written and produced by this one-man band. So, if you’re looking for the perfect album to soundtrack your summer, look no further. Arthur Walwin is your man.
