Jesus Fucking Christ – Homophobia Is Like Totally Gay

By Bradley Lengden

Jesus Fucking Christ (Remi Semshaug Langseth) has dropped his debut release ‘Homophobia Is Like Totally Gay’, and for a one man project, it truly is something monstrous.

It’s like an insane middle ground between electronic, punk and rap. There’s this cohesion of different genres that produces a monumental noise, picture a middle finger to any sort of genre boundaries or expectancies.

The whole record is just an uncontrollable chaos, there’s an unrelenting pace about it that barely seems to let up throughout, ‘Pope On A Rope’ and ‘Imma Gonna Kick U In Da Face’ are overloaded with energy and angst sounding like Langseth is throwing every last ounce of himself into the tracks.

There’s a ethereal feel to the whole thing that’s achieved through the surreal and trippy electronics looping in the background, something that is then shattered when the pissed off sounding vocals that switch between rock and hip hop styles. The switches between styles give it an unpredictability, keeping anyone listening hooked to see what the next track or sample brings with it.

‘Love you 2 bits’ is the closest thing to a let up in the onslaught, allowing the more techy elements of the record to shine through, making for something more atmospheric, more subtle, but no less impressive. It actually fits insanely well sandwiched between the relentlessness of the other tracks.

Building up to this huge finishing track ‘Sometimes My Arms Bend Back’, which draws listeners in with a fake lull, a false impression that it’s going to be another calmer track, until this explosion of aggression filled vocals which draws the record to a mammoth ending.

This obviously isn’t the first instance of a band combining rock and electronic samples, take bands like Nine Inch Nails and Linkin Park, masters of making that mix work. But without a doubt there is definitely something completely new and different about this, a refreshing obscurity. Think a more punky Crystal Castles or Pendulum.
