I, like many PT-ers, love Dave House. I love The Steal too. But sorry Dave, this EP is all about Jenny Owen Youngs. And more specifically, Jenny Owen Youngs version of Nelly’s ‘Hot In Here’ which is possibly the best cover version I have ever heard. Not only does she make the song sound great, she makes the song sound like one of her own. It’s instantly amazing, the kind of song that makes you stop what you are doing and just listen. I mean, the original version is a dancefloor classic, but this version is just great. Buy this record just for that one song, seriously.
And while ‘Hot In Here’ outshines the other three tracks, that’s not to say this split isn’t brilliant. Because it is. Dave starts off with ‘Beep Beep (Hi Hi)’ which reminds me of ‘On A Wire’-era The Get Up Kids, which is also known as a ‘very good thing’. The Kid Dynamite cover of ‘Death and Taxes’ is fantastic too; again Dave manages to make the track sound like one of his own, always the sign of a good cover version. But if you think those two tracks are good, just wait until Jenny comes along and blows your mind. ‘Hot In here’ is the highlight, but ‘Fuck Was I’ is great too. With Nettwerk releasing her album over here later this year, I’m guessing it won’t be long before the world cottons on.
