The angry pissed off world of Guvna is a difficult one to imagine. Amongst the four tracks on offer, all seem to have a very jagged edge of angst and malice which comes across fairly well if a little bludgeoning. But while all the anger and frustration in the world may sound nice on record if done well, it matters for nothing if your music all sounds the same. And this is unfortunately where the band fall flat on their faces. While opener ‘Jason Vorhees’ is a veritable stomper, the best bits are overdone and the feel of trying to cram to much into the song is apparent from the off. Yes you can play guitar well, the snare drum sounds delightful the faster and harder you pound it, but as some dutch guy said, you can’t rush these things.
The rest of the three tracks follow a similar pattern with ‘Out of Touch’ featuring some nice lyrics but the redundant ‘Psychopath’ and ‘Untitled’ proves a bridge too far and offer little new in terms of angles on the music. Guvna clearly have a degree of talent at their disposal, but until they can harbor it and dish it out in even slices of good punk pie then there talents may remain hidden for a little while yet.
