One Fine Day – Synapsis

By

On first inspection this appears to be a bog standard hardcore release, but if you pick at ‘Synapsis’, then it all becomes a little more clouded and condensed as god knows how many different styles are incorporated on an album which gives hardcore a new stance. The ten tracks on show are not for the weak at heart as growling vocals cast a dark shadow over the thunderous guitars and stomping drums that lay their mark throughout the 40 minutes.

Hailing from Carpignano in Northern Italy, these five Italian noisemakers are one of the darkest bands I have heard in a long time. Unlike most carbon copy bands of their genre, they don’t just stick to chugging riffs and breakneck drums, although admittedly opening track ‘Supernova’ bows down to these principles of modern hardcore. But tracks such as ‘Opus’ and ‘The Farewell Order’ are strictly spoken word with moments of noise thrown in to mix it up slightly and at the other end of the scale you have ‘NOD’ which is a largely electronic/percussion based song, all adding up to something slightly different. These kinds of songs may not be to everyone’s liking, but it certainly makes a change from what you have come to expect.

‘Motorized Pantomime to keep me beyond the fire’ is a rousing number with a superb riff running through the song keeping your ears pricked, while ‘Endoscope’ is in a similar vein as it thunders from the blocks and stands out. The flow is blocked somewhat as ‘Why that fellow keep pushing my head’ proves slightly disappointing save for a strong middle section, while ‘Neaptide’ is a stronger song with some solid breakdowns as the music is played to an impressively high standard.

Maybe this is what hardcore needed, One Fine Day aren’t afraid to do something different, and for all their efforts they pull it off to an acceptably high standard. Once again it may not be to everyone’s tastes but it is because everyone can be so small minded at times, that more record like this aren’t made.
