Let’s get one thing straight, Rosematter do not sound like Paramore. Yes, they are both female fronted acts and yes they’re both very poppy, but that’s where the similarities end. This record, originally released in mid-2007 but now with European distribution, kind of reminds me of Nerf Herder with a chick. There’s a definite sense of humour evident on this record with sly lyrics chucked in declaring a wit that’s as subtle as a brick. And the song titles prove it too…
‘Shooter’s Gonna Choke’ is more a mid-90s influenced pop-rock record than something out of the 21st Century. there’s no OTT production and no overlayered musical backgrounds. Songs like “Chuck Norris Jokes Aren’t Funny Anymore,” “Anyone Who Hates John Hinckley Doesn’t Understand True Love” and “Pull a Fievel and Go West” are all fun singalongs, even if the punchline isn’t quite a rip-roaring, memorable laugh. It’s good, but it ain’t great. That said, if you like girl vocalists there is enough to keep you interested in the short term and I’d recommend “Do Re Egon” as a good starting point.
Rosematter won’t change your life, but they could make you sing, laugh and dance. And maybe even at the same time…
