The Cab – Whisper War

By paul

Fueled By Ramen seem to have an affinity with Las Vegas bands and The Cab are the latest band to be linked with the city. I’m not sure if they will ever reach the mainstream success of Panic at the Disco, but the band certainly are aiming for it – ‘Whisper War’ is one of the poppiest albums I’ve ever heard on a non-pop record label. I’d liken this record to Maroon 5 jamming with Backstreet Boys on Simple Plan songs. I’ll put it another way; this album is not for Hatebreed fans.

To be fair the band write good pop songs. This record is consumed by sugary sweet production with slippery choruses begged to be sung along. But there’s too much electronic trickery and not enough musicianship to me. Take away the production and I wonder what you’d actually be left with – and that’s a genuine question, I’d love to hear the stripped down demos and hear what the band took into the studio and how much impact the production team have had on the band. I ask because ‘That 70s Song’ and ‘High Hopes In Velvet Ropes’ are way too smooth for a young new band.

Like Maroon 5, love The Cab. It’s as simple as that. I’m not quite as convinced but there’s a very, very good chance this band will become a mainstay on MTV, TMF, The Hits and all those channels I never watch.
