The Dollyrots remind me a little of Josie and the Pussycats. Yes, that made up band from the film of the same name with the adorable Rachel Leigh Cook taking up the lead role. While The Dollyrots only feature one female, Kelly Ogden certainly takes centre stage. Part Simple Plan, part Blink 182, her very catchy vocals give this a very mainstream appeal. And whether or not you argue this is more pop than pop punk, it’s still very, very catchy. In a ‘I really, really shouldn’t like this’ kinda way too.
In the same way Zolof and the Rock and Roll Destroyer have managed to write cute, catchy songs, ‘Because I’m Awesome’ is loaded with singalong moments that make Miss Ogden a potential pin up girl for legions of teenage fans the world over. And while there are a couple of absolute duffers scattered amongst this record, I can’t dismiss the good tracks – for what they are, unashamedly pop rock, they’re pretty good.
