You Me and The Atom Bomb – Fuck With Fire Split EP

By paul

Apparently the YM+TAB tracks on this release were recorded a year before the CD was actually put out at the arse end of last year. I find it amazing anyone could sit on these tracks and not release them because they’re not short of brilliant – arguably the best new UK band I’ve stumbled across this year. It’s hardly surprising that Household Name has already picked these Portsmouth boys up, because their Hot Water Music-meets-The Lawrence Arms sound is pretty much unrivalled in terms of UK acts. Partly made up of members of Jets v Sharks, the three-piece are gritty and raw, yet have enough melodies to race through five passionate songs that leave you gagging for more. ‘Emissions’ and ‘Set Back’ are highlights, but there’s not a bad song here. I highly anticipate their full lengther on HHN this summer.

Harrogate’s Fuck With Fire are a far more aggressive prospect, but still manage to deliver the goods. Guitar riffs pile out of nowhere throughout their five-tracks, with the riff to ‘Stuck With Me’ sticking out a mile. The backing gang vocals are highly impressive, even though the band race through their quintet of tracks with the proverbial pedal-to-the-metal. The closing ‘Sweet Revenge’ reminds me of old-skool NOFX until the vocals start – and although that isn’t a fair reflection of the band as a whole, it made me want to dig out some of the CDs i bought when I was a kid. In short, this is a cracking split and well worth the fiver it’ll set you back.
