Capsize – ‘A Reintroduction: The Essence Of All That Surrounds Me’

By Mark McConville

Defining choruses and melodic deliverance go hand in hand on Capsize’s new record ‘A Reintroduction: The Essence of All That Surrounds Me’. The album is harshly composed but compelling, pushing the band closer to prominence, under the lights of the post-hardcore dream. Their music could be perceived as being haunting and horror tinged, but that makes it even more engrossing. It may not appeal to some, but it will shock the bones of the post-hardcore disciples, who will rally this sound to the masses if it’s the last thing they do.

The opus is a brash inclusion, peppered with hooks and melodies that have been worked on with clear intent. There’s also enough intensity to bring people closer to the drama, a cultivated drama, mastered and fought for. And Capsize also master the art of creativity. Their lyrical prowess has been developed thoroughly and it’s rich with pessimism and hunger for a better world and mindset. The words shudder and develop into little notes of fear and loathing, crafted to tell a tale.

The album begins with a volatile introduction. ‘XX (Sew My Eyes Shut)’ contains a brilliant chorus that flourishes. It doesn’t bombard the senses; it cleans them out. The guitar influence isn’t overly technical, but does play a crucial part. ‘Tear Me Apart’ starts with an infectious burst of the guitars, generating a bashful but compelling sound. The lyrical content describes alienation and negativity. ‘Split My Soul’ offers a great drumbeat and guitar presence. The screams intertwine well with the clean vocals, falling into a state of unison.

Capsize have delivered a record that meets expectation. It may not win every heart that it jolts, but it’s a true winner. A product of truth from a promising act.
