Smash Mouth – Astro Lounge

By paul

Unfortunately for humanity, every once in a while up pops an album so awful, so terrible, that it really should be confined to the bargain basement bin for eternity. A word of warning for anyone who has stumbled across this review: DO NOT BUY THIS RECORD!

Words do not describe how bad this CD really is. Smash Mouth used to be good. Honestly, they really did. ‘Fush Yu Mang’ was one of 1997‘s most underrated ska and punk albums, and is a very good listen. That I do recommend. This, on the other hand, is absolutely awful. Gone is the punk, gone is the ska, gone are the tunes. Here is a band that saw MTV, saw the cash register ring before them, and bowed down to the record company by producing 15 tracks of bile.

Everything on this CD is made for MTV and radio. It’s pure pop, but not in a good way. Whereas Britney and Christina sing catchy pop songs, Smash Mouth produce some of the most offensive crap that you are ever likely to hear. Where are the singalong choruses? They don’t exist.

Look up ‘sell-out’ in the dictionary, and the words ‘Smash’ and ‘Mouth’ appear. It is so-called bands like this that give punk-rock a bad name. If you think Blink are sell-outs, don’t go anywhere near this lot.

I’m not going to dissect each song, because with any sense you won’t have made it this far down the review. Even if this was the last CD on earth, I would not touch it with a ten-foot pole. Absolutely awful.

Avoid like the plague.
