The Lion and the Wolf – ‘My Father’s Eyes’

By Jess Tagliani

When people think of UK-based singer-songwriters, most will invariably think of pop’s favourite flame-haired Ed Sheeran, which is a massive shame when you come across The Lion and The Wolf, aka Tom George. Based on the Isle of Wight, Tom draws from incredibly personal accounts of his life to write his melancholic songs, which has seen him release his debut album ‘Symptoms’, and hit the road with the likes of Rob Lynch, Our Time Down Here, and grace stages at Slam Dunk, Hevy Fest, and Isle Of Wight Festival.

His latest release, ‘My Father’s Eyes’, contains some pretty heavy lyrical content, as it was written after Tom’s father suffered a heart attack at the end of 2014, which he thankfully survived. It’s a short release of only two tracks, but it works out well in this case – it’s enough to keep people on the edge of their seats, enough to make them want more from this gifted man.

Title track ‘My Father’s Eyes’ is richly autumnal, with his gentle and lifting vocals making this a poignant track and a fitting tribute to his father. His lyrical content is captivating and breath-taking; Tom knows how to create an emotive space with his words and music.

And then there’s ‘Barstools’, a wistfully whimsical track that’s strong in every way – from his voice, to the delicate picking of his guitar, to the swell of saxophone. His voice is reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel, as it’s gentle and lilting, but still full of power.

‘My Father’s Eyes’ firmly proves that The Lion and The Wolf is one of the most promising, and sadly underrated, singer-songwriters that the UK has to offer. He’s created a poignant, melancholy release that’s beautifully mature and strong. An emotive and gorgeously melodic release, ‘My Father’s Eyes’ will offer comfort for those long, dark winter nights.
