The Take – Dolomite

By paul

This release has been a long time in coming. It seems an age since The Take released ‘Propeller’ – and to be fair it has been four years and in my eyes that does infact constitute an ‘age’. A swift move from Household Name to Bombed Out has seen The Take mature a little, although it could be said their Jawbreaker-influenced slabs of punk/rock were always mature. What ‘Dolomite’ does showcase is a massively underrated band and a set of musicians who should surely get the credit they deserve.

Despite the four year gap, the thudding ‘Leather Jacket’ kicks this album off where the last one left us. Citing Jawbox and Samiam as further influences, I feel The Take are at their best when they’re going at it a little bit; the buzzing guitars and the soaring vocal melodies are what this band do best. And while you could argue it’s nothing we’ve not heard before, the grit and raw emotion that eminates from this band shines through, separating them from their peers. While ‘Propeller’ was awesome all the way through, ‘Dolomite’ does have a couple of tracks which drag, although nothing to make you reach for the skip button. They may have been away for a while, but The Take are one of those bands you shouldn’t miss out on.
