Interview: Jettblack

By Lais

UK rockers Jettblack released ‘Black Gold’ (a collection of previously unreleased and re-worked material) on Monday, and to celebrate, we had a chat with bassist Tom Wright.

YOUR NEW COMPILATION ALBUM, BLACK GOLD, JUST CAME OUT. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK? WHICH ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR?

To be honest, not many people have heard any of the tracks on the album so I want them to hear all of them. I really want to push the title track and for people to have a good listen to that as it is such an epic track. We are all really proud of it. We’ve also got an acoustic version of a new track on there. It has big potential and is an indication of the type of stuff we’re writing for the next album.

HOW WAS IT WORKING WITH LEGENDS LIKE DEEP PURPLE AND THIN LIZZY ON THE ALBUM?

We didn’t get to meet Damon (Johnson, Thin Lizzy) actually as that was done through management/label etc but we got to hang out with Ian (Paice, Deep Purple) when we recorded in his studio. He is such a down to earth and nice guy. He is more than happy to have a chat about the old days and it was great to hear it from a legend who has seen and done a lot. And the drum track he casually laid down on a right handed drum kit was awesome.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE REST OF 2013? ANY TOURING PLANNED ASIDE FROM THE FESTIVAL DATES THIS SUMMER?

We have a few smaller festivals that we are headlining. The details are on our Facebook. Then we are planning to tour in October/November but nothing confirmed yet. Album number 3 is getting written as we speak and this will take priority over any tours. We hope to record at the end of this year and get it out in March/April 2014.

ARE THERE ANY BANDS YOU’D LIKE TO WORK WITH THAT YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY?

I think a lot of people pigeonhole us as an 80s throwback band. We don’t see ourselves as that at all and love all forms of rock. Yes we have influences and they are mainly from the 80s and 90s, which is when we grew up, but we are into so much other music too. So you may be surprised by the fact that we’d love to collaborate with acts like Rammstein or Graveyard as much as we’d love to work with legends like AC/DC and Metallica.

WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL? WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN FIVE YEARS?

Same as most bands really: world domination. But mainly just living off the music, and playing festivals and gigs all over the world.
