Billy Bragg and Joe Henry reveal new track, ‘Hobo’s Lullaby’

By Ben Tipple

Folk-punk veteran Billy Bragg has revealed a new track from his forthcoming release with Joe Henry. Their take on Woody Guthrie’s ‘Hobo Lullaby’ will appear on ‘Shine A Light’, due for release on the 23rd September 2016.

“Woody Guthrie rode the freight trains across America during the Great Depression and ‘Hobo’s Lullaby’ was his favourite song,” Bragg explains. “It was written and recorded in 1934 by Goebel Reeves, ‘The Texas Drifter’, who specialised in hobo-philosopher recitations and cowboy ballads.”

“The song entered Woody’s repertoire when he was broadcasting from Los Angeles on KFVD with ‘Lefty Lou’ in the late 30s and became one of his signature tunes.”

The track arrives as Bragg and Henry announce further ‘Shine A Light’ tour dates for January 2017. The full list of dates, including the latest additions, can be found after ‘Hobo’s Lullaby’.
