Christian Marclay and The Vinyl Factory collaboration to open this week

By Ben Tipple

A new exhibition by Swiss American artist Christian Marclay opens this week at White Cube in Bermondsey, London. The exhibition continues Marclay’s exploration of the relationship between sound and imagine, featuring artwork based on onomatopoeia taken from comic books.

According to the exhibitions website, “unlike earlier instances of sound mimesis in his work, these focus solely on the wet sounds suggestive of the action of painting. Combining cartoon-strip imagery and the dripping, pouring and splashing noises associated with gestural abstraction, the works ironically bridge a gap between art movements as distinct as Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.”

As part of the exhibition, Marclay has joined with The Vinyl Factory and the London Sinfonietta, inviting a whole host of names from across genres to perform in the studio every weekend over its residency. Each performance will be recorded on the world’s first mobile vinyl manufacturing press – allowing visitors to witness the full process of creating vinyl on site.

Vinyl will be available to purchase immediately after for £25.

All performances will be free of charge, starting at 3PM on Saturdays and Sundays. The guest performers will be announced as the exhibition continues. These include some big names from the punk and alternative scenes.

Performances commence with musician, author and professor David Toop on Saturday 31 January 2015 and improviser John Butcher and London Sinfonietta on Sunday 1 February 2015.

For more information, head to the exhibition’s website.
