Two people have died at the scene, and 23 have been injured, in a serious incident at this year’s South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.

A driver reportedly attempting to escape from police, drove through a manned barricade cordoning off a dedicated pedestrian area for the festival, hitting pedestrians along the way. The car also struck a moped, killing a man and a woman at the scene. 23 further individuals have been reported as injured, 5 of them critically. The car came to a halt when striking a taxi, before the driver was apprehended attempting to flee on foot.

The driver will be charged with two counts of capital murder, and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.

The incident happened outside the Mohawk venue shortly before Tyler, The Creator was scheduled to play. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims from tonight’s tragedy. Make sure everyone you know is home safe tonight,” the venue tweeted.

SXSW Festival is the premiere showcase platform for up-and-coming talent. This year’s event includes performances by Against Me!, Cerebral Ballzy, Save Your Breath and OFF!.
