Midwest emo aficionados, Hawthorne Heights, have just released a special project, ‘Dads of Sad’ in which they’ve turned pop into its sad cousin (obviously dressed in all black). Taking on ‘8’ by Billie Eilish and ‘Butterflies’ by Kacey Musgraves – two of pop music’s undisputed queens – Hawthorne Heights have imbued both tracks with their signature emo flavour. Front man, JT Woodruff, comments that they thought “it was a great exercise in trying to make their happy pop songs sound like sad emo songs.”
Clearly unafraid of taking risks, the band’s collection has already garnered a lot of love on the Twittersphere, including a heartfelt message from Musgraves herself. If you haven’t heard it yet, give it a spin below.
