Self Defense Family announce new EP

New York post-hardcore collective Self Defense Family have unveiled details of their new EP, ‘When The Barn Caves In’. Featuring two new songs, the record will be available from the 27th November via Iron Pier.

“We’re not scared of our influences,” says Self Defense Family singer and lyricist Patrick Kindlon, “and plenty of them come from Baltimore. We saw recording in that city as an opportunity to channel some of those influences. Then we ran the tracks through a filter of Mary’s combusting relationship. The result is songs guaranteed to bring you the fuck down.”

“Almost everyone was in a bad mood and feeding off of each other,” guitarist Benjamin Tate adds, explaining the difficulties within band member’s lives around the time of recording. “Writing was way more of a struggle than it usually is and I think everyone came away from the day unhappy with the songs.”

“Unlike almost any other recording I have ever done, I had almost no feedback on them,” he adds, upon hearing the finished product. “The songs sound huge and warm and even the songwriting seems better than I remember it being. I left the session feeling defeated and now I would say this will be among my favorite recordings to come out this year.”

As well as the title track, the release will feature b-side ‘Alan’, named after the band’s multi-instrumentalist and photographer Alan Huck. Huck, is reported to have connected with the release the most out of all of Self Defense Family, is also responsible for the cover art.

‘When The Barn Caves In’ follows their ‘Heaven is Earth’ LP, released earlier in the year via Deathwish.
