First Play of the debut EP from Bowhunter

By Glen Bushell

Those who have followed the UK’s stellar underground music scene in the last few years will no doubt be familiar with The JCQ. Their off-kilter rhythms and anthemic hooks were highly acclaimed, and they never followed any set paths or trends other than the ones they created for themselves. After the band sadly called it a day earlier this year, people were left wondering where they would head next, and with its members going on to other bands and avenues, it is time for front man Jack Saunders to unveil his latest offering in the form of the excellent Bowhunter.

Comprising of a group of friends from Kent, Bowhunter came together very naturally and their birth was almost inevitable. “We’ve all known each other for years” says guitarist Edward Li, “We’ve all played in different bands in the same scene and the timing was just right as Jack’s old band had just finished”.

Musically Bowhunter is vastly different to The JCQ. Their up tempo power-pop carries just as much energy as Saunders former band, however this time around giving his high-range vocal a chance to soar over the bands melody driven rock. The bands debut EP ‘To Love Again’ was recorded by former JCQ guitarist/keyboard player Martin Ruffin at In Lieu Of A Studio, where he has captured both the aesthetic and the highly accomplished playing of the band perfectly.

So where do Bowhunter go from here? The band are yet to play their first show but they are already looking ahead, with ‘To Love Again’ serving as the perfect introduction. “The future is a mystery but we’re hoping for some great things” Edward Li continues, “Over the next year at least we’ll play a bunch of shows and likely release another EP”.

Check out ‘To Love Again’ below and familiarise yourself with the songs, because you are sure to be hearing them a lot more in the coming months.
