Burn Daylight AKA James Pepper has been making music for about 18 months and he’s come a long way since his University days. What originally started out as writing some Bruce Springsteen influenced songs has turned into something that has afforded some absolutely amazing opportunities for him. He’s played shows with Punktastic favourites such as Into It. Over It. and Vinnie Caruana as well as having played some memorable headlining shows of his own along the way.
His latest offering is new EP ‘Young Lions.’ Not out until later this year, today sees its very first airing in full and to say it’s been in some very capable hands along the way is an understatement. Jamie Abela (Searching Alaska) was drafted in to play Drums while the Bass and Saxophone was provided by a former session band that James used to play in. It was mixed by Bob Cooper at Propellor Studios in Leeds and mastered by Maz Murad at Metropolis Studios, having worked with the likes of The Killers and U2 in the past; it’s safe to say that the production values in this EP are brilliant.
So, is ‘Young Lions’ any good? To put it simply, yes, yes it is. The music comes somewhere along the lines of The Gaslight Anthem and Bruce Springsteen. The lyrics are raw and extremely honest while the musicianship makes for an extremely relaxing listen especially in the absolutely brilliant title track ‘Young Lions’ which provides the EP with an extremely rousing finale. The Record comes exactly one year since it was writing begun at Reading Festival 2011 and what better way to let people hear it as they’re coming home from the Festival giving many people a chance to reflect on an absolutely fantastic weekend. Post Festival blues? nah, listen to this and you’ll experience happy nostalgia knowing that you get to do it all again next year.
So what’s next for Burn Daylight? Well, there is some full band shows in the pipeline in order to give this record the release it deserves. He also has some solo runs with Ducking Punches and Harker in November. So try to check those out, but for now, enjoy ‘Young Lions’ it may just end up being your favourite EP of the year.
