INTRODUCING: Harbour

By Chris Marshman

Since releasing their debut EP ‘So Far’ in July, Cheltenham based alt rockers Harbour have had a certain buzz surrounding them. Add in the fact that they’ve had some high profile support slots with the likes of The Xcerts and Futures, and it’s fair to say their future seems bright.

Describing their sound isn’t exactly straightforward. According to the band, they play “soul-feeding alternative rock” that’s “good for the mind, but we’ll give you enough to throw yourself around too.” To be fair, they pretty much have that spot on. Take ‘Colder’ (embedded below) for example – it starts off with a great vocal performance and builds to a point where you can imagine untold amounts of shit being lost on stage.

With high expectations surrounding them, you might wonder whether they feel lots of pressure to carry on impressing with their next offering. When we asked them, it was clear that they’re utterly confident in their own abilities. They have “a strong ethic that comes first – to put out material we like, not what everyone else is playing”, and simply put, it seems that sticking to what works for them as a band will always be their number one aim. They do admit that in the back of their minds they’ll always worry about whether fans will like new material but then again, that’s something that every band in the scene has to deal with.

Harbour are keen to point out just how grateful they are for the support received so far. One of the things they enjoy most as a band – which they made sure to tell us – is listening to what their fans think of their music, whether it’s feedback on their records or thoughts on a show they’ve just played. They really do enjoy and encourage hearing what people think. It’s not always the case that a band wants to take honest advice from their fans and then actually listens to it. It’s this and their go-for-it attitude that makes us think they’ll succeed.

So what’s next for Harbour? Well, they’ve just finished recording their new single ‘Dear God’ and by their own admission “the feeling around Camp-Harbour is that we really have stepped it up.” They have a couple of dates towards the end of this year, and then the plan is to promote ‘Dear God’ with a tour in the new year. They plan to follow that up with another studio trip in 2013. Let’s hope it’s sooner rather than later.
