itoldyouiwouldeatyou aren’t trying to cheer you up with their new EP

By Ben Tipple

There’s a distinct raw quality in the indie-punk sound of Guildford/London based outfit, itoldyouiwouldeatyou. It makes for a bittersweet sound, one that balances rough and jangling guitars with atmospheric musical soundscapes ultimately touching on both math-rock and emo. On ‘Don’t Cheer Up’, the unpolished finish injects an honest and immediate edge that retains the band’s grassroots vibe and gives the sound added substance.

“‘Don’t Cheer Up’ was intense to record over the two days we had, but we’re really pleased with how it came out,” itoldyouiwouldeatyou open up. “It’s great to see people you love and respect interpreting and improving on each other’s work in real time around you, which is exactly what was happening while we made this EP.”

The deliberate uncertainty in the sound accurately demonstrates the records themes. “The songs are about feeling weird and self-conscious for no good reason,” the band continue. “We really hope you enjoy it, there’s a lot more to come.”

‘Don’t Cheer Up’ follows the band’s split EP alongside Annabel Allum, released late last year, and will be available via Rose Coloured Records from the 16th September 2015. The band feature two former members of Our Lost Infantry, and the release welcomes former bandmate Thom Ashworth on production duties. Ashworth even provided his vocals for one of the tracks.

‘Don’t Cheep Up’ will be available to purchase via BandCamp from the 16th September 2015. itoldyouiwouldeatyou will be playing two shows in support of the release.
