Masts keep things interesting on debut album, ‘Adversaries’

By Ben Tipple

On ‘Adversaries’, Cardiff based Masts’ debut full-length, the band have made a conscious decision to shake it up. Like At The Drive-In, Fugazi and Hot Water Music before them, there’s little in their post-hardcore to latch onto. Just as any of the record’s eleven tracks settle into a routine, ‘Adversaries’ instantly shakes itself loose. At times as unpredictable as the post-hardcore forerunners, it also at times treads a dirty emo path. Above anything, it keeps things interesting.

“We’re excited as it’s our first album and we’re eager for everyone to hear it,” vocalist and guitarist Tom Roberts explains, before cementing his point. “I guess what we always strive to do when we write songs is to make them interesting. We try to avoid simple power chord riffs where possible and utilise both Tom Watkins’ [co-vocalist and guitarist] and my styles. I’d like to think we write catchy guitar parts. I guess Phil [Smith] and [Tom] Wallace are alright at drums and bass too. Probably…”
