What do you get when you combine Daft Punk’s beats with the sillyness of HelloGoodbye? Well, something that would sound a little like Hampshire’s 303 Did This To Me. With retro gaming all the rage, this Nintend-esque sound is becoming very prevalent among modern-day bands and 303… make no bones about where their alegiances lie. The oddly named ‘”‘ EP is four tracks of samples and beats – and very, very few vocals. And when there are vocals, they’re steeped in electronica. Punk rock, this ain’t.
But it’s good for what it is. The tracks are catchy and addictive and I can see the band getting a decent fanbase if they can make an interesting and entertaining live show. The EP’s title-track reminds me a little of Daft Punk, without the phat beats mind, but it’s the modern day Nintendo-band influence which comes out a lot more. the synths run the show throughout ‘Rainbow’, although the clever use of samples keeps this interesting for at least a dozen plays. Whether the band have any kind of lasting appeal depends on how much they can twist a very current style of music without making it boring and generic. But in the short term at least, this is quite fun.
