Alright The Captain – Snib

By Andy

ALRIGHT THE CAPTAIN‘s brand of math rock intensifies in their newest release, ‘Snib’. Beginning with ‘Rostov Could Get It’, they display complex electronics with gentle melodies and crashing guitars. This sets the tone perfectly for the whole album. From one song to the next, there’s a steady flow making it sound well formed – not just a collection of songs but a strong album. There’s a rougher sound, particularly in a song like ‘Guilt’ that adds a darker touch to the release, while the slightly polka rhythm of parts of ‘Mega Mega Drive’ shows off the range Alright The Captain have. Each of the songs goes through multiple changes, making it hard to keep track of exactly where you are in the album. This isn’t a negative quality though – it gives the release a slightly dreamlike feel as it seamlessly passes along.

Perhaps the most haunting parts are the simple melodies that crop up throughout. This is where the real emotion in the album lies, highlighted by the variations of each track. Concluding with ‘Clamp’, the music fades out in a slow and deliberate manner, ending the release as vividly as it started. An especially impressive debut from Alright The Captain.
