Ashbury, to me, sound like the Gin Blossoms if they were given a 21st Century emo makeover. They play a brand of very poppy rock, steeped in really clever little vocal melodies and harmonies. It’s a kind of written-for-radio inoffensive brand of rock that will undoubtedly offend as many people as it pleases, but if you like bands such as The Higher, The Cab and others then this band will be added to your favourites in no time.
‘Let’s Make A Scene’ doesn’t tear up any trees but it does what it does well. Opener ‘Off With The Lights‘ is really, really catchy and sets the tone for the rest of this 5-track EP. The vocals are used as the main weapon and are super catchy throughout. ‘Under Your Skin’ and ‘Figure Me Out’ do exactly the same thing – they rock along nicely with a clever little vocal melody to have you singing along. Ashbury aren’t as clever lyrically as their hometown peers of Panic at the Disco, but they’re certainly in the same league as similar bands such as The Scenic and The Cab. If you like ultra melodic rock music, then you’ll almost certainly dig Ashbury.
