Hands down, the best release on BSM ever. Well, maybe apart from the GCWCF EP. But discount that and this is the best release on BSM ever. It’s been well documented that I’m bored of music. I’m bored of the same old bands doing the same old thing; music just isn’t stimulating me as much as it once did. But bands like Blakfish are definitely keeping me interested while others bore me rigid. Blakfish are so damn good because they don’t neglect choruses and melodies. Sure, they go off on one and spazz out at random moments, but the melodies are enormous – ‘Jeremy Kyle Is A Marked Man’ is a fucking brilliant pop song, for instance.
And it’s this happy medium which makes Blakfish such an exciting prospect. They can sound like Glassjaw or At The Drive In at one moment and then something a lot less intense in another. It’s inventive, creative and lots of other things ending in ‘-ive’. At five songs this record is both perfectly formed but also leaves you gagging for me. ‘My Stomach…’ is sharp and seductive, almost beckoning you in to join it’s wondrous basslines and spazzy guitars, while ‘Make Your Bed and Lie In It’ is an aggressive beast, twirling and tussling with sharp guitar riffs. The band manage to mix the two styles perfectly, even mid song, which makes them sound fresh and new.
‘See You In Another City‘ is ruddy brilliant. Go forth and buy.
