“This is sick metal for kids who want scream, dance, and burn their parents house down” – when a press release says things like this, it makes me want to listen to a band, especially when they’re every bit as good as the words on the sheet of A4 paper that usually contains a turgid history of said act. Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon are likely to be one of the bands on a lot of lips during 2005, if this EP is anything to go by anyway. It’s not so much the fact that this is a vicious, unrelenting record, more the fact it’s ambitious, inventive and downright clever. If I’m honest, if this record had been much longer then I think it may have lost its appeal. Instead it’s almost the perfect length; just sheer emotion and power.
‘This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Is For’ isn’t a record I’d normally enjoy. Mixing pummelling hardcore with a tiny bit of melody, each song contains enough breakdowns to make this record genuinely interesting. There are literally five mini-songs within each actual song; which is refreshing because many of the bands I know that play this kind of music are far from as inventive. I’m not going to reel off a list of bands I believe Bring Me The Horizon sound like because I’m no connosieur of this genre and I don’t want to come across as ill-informed and naive (I know I am already…). All I need to say is that this is a record bursting at the seams with musical goodness and, if you’re a fan of inventive ‘heavy’ music, this should really be part of your collection.
