Butch Walker and The Black Widows – The Spade

By Tom Aylott

Butch Walker is probably music’s best kept secret. Over the past ten years he’s amassed a die-hard following both in his native America and here in the UK. However, while most may not recognise his name, they certainly know his songs. During this time he’s become the go-to-guy for highly melodic pop punk, having worked with cult acts like Midtown and Dashboard Confessional, and all the way through to chart topping acts such as Panic! At The Disco and All Time Low.

So given this history, it could come as a surprise to find that he hasn’t taken the easy route and released an album of similar pop punk glory, but instead shambolic rock n’ roll with slight country twang undertones.

The opening trio of songs; ‘Bodegas and Blood’, ‘Everysinglebodyelse’ and ‘Summer of 89′ waste no time showing off Walker’s talent for wry lyrics and ridiculously singable choruses, but this isn’t a one man show as the talents of his band The Black Widows’ are clearly felt in the lush harmonies and tightness of playing.

The album itself was recorded live in the studio, and while it doesn’t feel as polished as others Walker has produced, it does aid the vibe they seem to be batting for. The album has its more introspective moments, which fans have come to expect from Walker, and “Closest Thing to You I’m Gonna Find” is a classic heart by your cuffs ballad that’s sure to become a fan favourite.

So if you like your rock a little rough around the edges, but also harbour a secret desire to sing your heart out while crying over your ex, then this impressive album is a definite must.
