I can’t decide if I like Cage The Wolves or not. On one hand the tracks on this EP sound like Michael Cera singing at the end of Juno (ie pretty badly), while at other times the songs are rather charming. There’s a lot of this acoustic, folky stuff going around at the minute and so my tolerance for the genre is beginning to weaken. It’s not that ‘This Devine House’ is particularly bad, I just think it’s probably not really my thing and while some people will lap up the DIY recordings and scratchy vocals, I just find it all a bit…well, cheap sounding. I’m not convinced vocalist Rick’s scratchy, whispering vox are anything other than an attempt to mask the fact he can’t really sing and that, for me, plays on my mind throughout the length of the EP. I just think there are better artists doing this kind of thing which makes this a bit redundant.
