Captain Accident – Pick Up The Microphone

By Andy

With the clocks going back, everything getting darker and the bitterness of Winter setting in, the desire to dislike this album set in straight away. It’s easy to feel a bit apathetic when everything seems so drab, fortunately that’s not the case as CAPTAIN ACCIDENT is like an Indian Summer washing away the grey.

Pick Up The Microphone is a happy-go-lucky ska-pop/reggae album born out of a bedroom project from the tropical climates of… err Cardiff. Don’t think Welsh ragga metal a la Skindred, this is a more tender love affair, jammed with some super sweet vocal harmonies spread over the top of laid back bass riffs and reverb-drenched guitars, which sound like sunshine pouring out of your speakers. Debut single ‘Fire! Fire! Fire!’ sounds like a classic reggae track of days gone by and begs the question: “Why aren’t Captain Accident massive?”

This record is reminiscent of a less mainstream Paolo Nutini meeting the poppier end of the Finley Quaye spectrum. Do yourself a favour this winter – don’t sit in front of the fire, sit in front of your stereo and soak up the warmth.
