Chuck Ragan – Covering Ground

By Tom Aylott

Album number three for CHUCK RAGAN plays out like an ode to the open road. From its title, ‘Covering Ground’ to its lyrical themes, and even the four or so minute segue between final and secret track, everything about the record harks back to life on the road. Let’s be honest though, it’s not that surprising; Ragan has been on the road for the better part of 20 years now.

Anybody that has picked-up any of the Hot Water Music man’s previous solo material will know to expect gruff, twenty-a-day vocals alongside acoustic strumming, fiddle and a folk/country inspired style. ‘Covering Ground’ doesn’t step away from that blueprint, although it is slightly reeled-in from the layered explosion that was 2009’s ‘Gold Country’.

The record again features long-time cohorts Jon Gaunt (fiddle) and Joe Ginsberg (upright bass) adding a depth to Ragan’s guitar and inimitable vocals. This time round Ragan’s brought a few friends along, including Frank Turner, Brian Fallon, and the ever-impressive Audra Mae. But no name-checking is necessary; like his previous releases, this album is all about Chuck Ragan.

‘Nomad By Fate’ and ‘Wish On The Moon’ just about edge-out the album’s other nine songs, both offering big hooks as well as that trademark Ragan introspective approach to song-writing. ‘Right As Rain’ changes the pace, brandishing more of a romantic campfire lullaby feel to it, exquisitely finished by Mae‘s backing vocals. ‘Meet You In The Middle’, another catchy number this time featuring Fallon, is likely to win over any Gaslight Anthem fans that have been dragged over from that tour earlier in the year.

Ultimately, ‘Covering Ground’ proves an enjoyable listen and, it should be said, cements Ragan’s position at the top of the ‘Acoustic Folk Punk’ food chain. Few have a voice as good as this man, and even fewer are able to maintain his standards.
