Claypigeon – S/T

By paul

ClayPigeon are a self-proclaimed punkskareggaeraprock band that mix a massive amount of influences to come up with something pretty unique, a kind of Sonic Boom Six-influenced, less psychotic version anyway. This seven-tracker is very varied and very interesting, albeit a little long at 35 minutes. But it does showcase a very talented band with plenty of good ideas, and at a time when too many bands all sound the same ClayPigeon have to be applauded for trying to do something a little different.

‘Go Play Nice’ and the cracking ‘Any Girl’ are arguably the highlights – the album’s first track mixes so many different styles it’s actually very difficult to say exactly what the tracks sound like, or even mention other band’s you can compare them to. While King Prawn would be obvious, the band do sound unique enough to have their own pigeonholed sound, and as I mentioned earlier, that’s a rarity nowadays. While I can’t always say I like the vocals – the last minute or so of the first song went on a bit too long for my liking – there’s variation, melody and much more and that’s always a good thing. Not the best record I’ve heard this year, but a good one nonetheless.
