Collingwood write catchy melodic indie rock in the vein of nearly stars Easyworld. There’s a touch of the epic about Time To Shine, at 6 minutes, whilst the also band drop their wonderful acoustic The Retreat which reminds me very much of Frank Turner in terms of lyrical style – its a song about what happens next, friends and the good times. True, the first track on this four tracker is a great opener and hints at something special, especially when they let go and the vocalist very belts it out. There’s a little bit of restraint which holds 3 of these tracks back a little in places (not counting the acoustic Retreat) which, if dropped, like in the closing minute of the opening track shows these lads could be fantastic.
I’m not usually that taken by the genre as a whole, but this is a fun, down to earth EP with some excellent songwriting and good vocals – it’s a nice change of pace and definitely worth checking out.
