Brighton is practically a conveyor belt of bands, spewing out talent left, right and centre. CM,CS as I shall call them from here on in are another band from the city that look set to do good things. It’s borderline as to whether it’s really something we’d cover as the band play a jaunty, choppy post-rock that probably takes influence from the early Deep Elm bands, possibly some Dischord stuff and maybe even Joy Division and Morrissey. ‘Slow News Day’ sounds very Joy Division-y at the intro, before the guitars kick in and it sounds quite unnerving. When the gang vocals come in, gasp, it even sounds like some of the ‘Daisy’-era Brand New material.
CM,CS are clearly a talented band and have the ability to make a name for themselves. I feel this EP is a little too rough and ready and some parts of some tracks sound like they were recorded in a dustbin. The guitar tone doesn’t sit well with me either. That said, the ideas are executed well and the vocals are tremendous throughout. Ones to watch, for sure.
