Cuba Cuba – Tales From The Cabin

By paul

Cuba Cuba a band so good they named themselves twice.”

There’s nothing better than opening a press release with some of the cheesiest comments I’ve ever read. But truth be told Cuba Cuba are very good indeed. They remind me a little of Data Select Party; choppy indie rock with lots of melodies and singalongs. Hailing from Wales this EP will propel them into the same comparisons bands such as Kids In Glass Houses and The Blackout have had before them, but they don’t really sound like any of those more famous Welsh bands. Think Minus The Bear or Friendly Fires.

‘Tales From The Cabin’ is a very solid release. There’s the right level of keys and synth and the vocals have a nice little Welsh twang to them on certain words. Romesh at Long Wave has done the usual excellent job in putting this together too so it sounds spot on. If I could have one minor gripe I’d say the choruses aren’t quite catchy enough. They’re good, and certainly on the right lines, but the hooks weren’t quite big enough to have me singing along. Still, ‘Visualizer’ is a lovely little song and the quirky ‘Bats!’ is good enough on its own to make this worth listening to.

The future’s certainly bright for Cuba Cuba so mark these boys down as ones to watch.
