Daylight Fireworks – Secretly, We Hope

By Andy

This is the newest release from Bristol-based DAYLIGHT FIREWORKS, containing six songs of guitar pop. The first track is purely instrumental, and is perhaps a little indulgent considering it spends four minutes building up to a chant of “Daylight Fireworks!” There is some benefit to this though – the whole EP gives off the impression that song structure and arrangement is very important to the band. The additional synth used on ‘You Know You Know’ livens up the recording somewhat, giving it a jaunty feel. The vocals are a little weak at times and could do with a bit more oomph, but perhaps the understated style is a deliberate move.

The problem is, the understatement is a little bit too much – after a couple of listens, the EP doesn’t seem to have anything else to it. A little too simple with no real bite, the songs don’t stand out either from each other or taken together as a whole. All in all there are some catchy songs, but with nothing to back this up, a fairly forgettable release.
