Dive Dive – Potential

By Andy

Despite this being the third album from the ‘Frank Turner backing band’ it’s likely to be a first impression for most. How they’ve managed to fit recording/releasing this in with a very busy touring schedule and produce something of this quality is quite stunning. It doesn’t seem rushed, as one might expect given the circumstances. In fact it’s very well produced and excellently constructed.

The vocals of Jamie Stuart are very radio friendly and are accompanied by some very catchy riffs that form the foundations for a great record. This is evident immediately with the opening track ‘Mr 10%’ which shows off their writing skills and the ability to create songs you’ll have in your head for days. You can understand why ‘Liar’ was chosen as the opening single as well with the fast pace hitting optimum levels here that guarantees this will be a real sing-a-long at shows.

There is a harder sound at other stages of the album though, courtesy of ‘The Alarm’, for example. Dive Dive however aren’t afraid to slow it down either with ‘The You In Me’ allowing you to catch your breath. The bonus track of ‘Potential’ is also beautiful.

Excellent lyrics and delivery throughout are the staple of this album, at various times you get a mixture of frustration, resentment and anger that are regularly delivered with a hint of humour that keep you interested from start to finish.

If you’re into your post-hardcore in any way ‘Potential’ comes highly recommended. This is one of the first great albums to be released in 2011 that indicates it’s going to be another great year for UK rock music.
