Well this is rather jaunty. It’s lazy to compare them to The King Blues, but Don’t Let Paris Fool You play a poppy, acoustic brand of folk-punk that features a mandolin and lots of vocal harmonies that make them interesting and vibrant. Their ideas don’t always work, but they take a few risks at being a little different and for that they get the thumbs up from me.
Anyway, this lot started out as a solo project and is now a band of four and they mix a fair few different styles. I wouldn’t say the band do anything new or that other bands haven’t covered, but they infuse it successfully. There’s a charm across this EP which I really like. ‘My Bike…’ takes a while to get going but once it does it will nestle in your brain and take up camp for a while. And the vocal harmonies are, on the whole, well executed. The only time this band falls by the wayside is when they try a little too much and on a DIY recording it sounds a little messy. Still, they can be forgiven for that as ‘First Time Caller…’ is really rather good.
