Embrace The City are a young five-piece from Bedfordshire and this is their second EP. The band claim to be influenced by Paramore and Nickelback (!?!) yet sound like neither. They do have a female vocalist so I guess that’s where the Paramore link comes in. This EP sounds like it has been recorded live and as a result sounds pretty messy. The drums in particular sound out of time and out of synch, while the vocals float in and out of tune, sometimes even sounding too loud as the levels clearly were not set properly when this was recorded. ‘Someone Else‘s Truth’ is an important lesson for any young band. It’s a record that’s full of good ideas and enthusiasm and I don’t want to knock the band for having a good time and playing with a smile on their face. But if you want to be taken seriously as a band you need a decent recording. Bands should never, ever, under any circumstances, take the cheap option when recording songs. If you can’t afford a decent producer and recording studio, DON’T BOTHER! This EP ends up being mostly unlistenable because everything about it sounds bad. It doesn’t do the band justice at all. It sounds muddy, toneless and just messy – and that’s down to whoever recorded it rather than the band themselves. ‘Someone Else‘s Truth’ would probably score much higher with a better recording. It’s difficult to tell how good the band could be, so I’ll reserve judgement until the next set of songs.
