Eye Alaska – Genesis Underground

By paul

10 out of 10 for originality – Eye Alaska sound like loads of bands you wouldn’t expect them to, like Justin Timberlake and Maroon 5 and then somehow manage to mix them with rockier elements to come up with a totally different take on the usual. It’s kind of refreshing, even if it doesn’t always work. But at a time when bands are really not pushing the boundaries, you have to at least give Eye Alaska some credit.

Describing their sound as “cinematic rock,” the band mix pop, rock, hip-hop and even some lounge-style elements to good effect. Each track flows nicely into the next, although each has a different feel. It’s very laidback and smooth too – ‘Show Me DaLuv’ is so laid back it’s almost horizontal. ‘American Landslide’ is another highlight too, as is the slightly chunkier ‘Rocky Road’. Eye Alaska will polarize opinions. Some will think there’s not enough crunch to their very poppy sound, but to be fair I think there’s enough intrigue and interest to keep most involved.
