Fantastic Castle – Flying and Thinking Machines

By paul

There’s a bit during ‘Comedy Raincloud’ which really reminds me of the song ‘Time After Time’. I think Cyndi Lauper did it, at least in my mind she did anyway. Fantastic Castle are a young three-piece and this is their debut four-track EP and it shows plenty of promise. It never quite hits the spot, but there are plenty of good ideas and key changes and it’s interesting when you conside many bands of this ilk follow the very formulaic verse/chorus/verse/chorus style and sound completely American.

FC don’t do that at all, so while the vocals aren’t the strongest they’re delivered in a very British and ultimately endearing manner. ‘Flying Cars’ sounds a little Feeder-esque actually – the vocals are Grant Nicholas-y throughout, making the first and last songs the strongest. Overall, however, there are plenty of good points and for a starting point Fantastic Castle are on the right lines. Sharpening the songs up and practising their little behinds off will certainly put them in good stead.
