Flogging Molly – Speed of Darkness

By Tom Aylott

Flogging Molly used to get a fair few unjustDropkick Murphys clone” accusations at them, and probably still do, but the fact is they are and always have been so much more than that.

Deep rooted in Folk, and one of the best loved bands in the punk scene, Flogging Molly have returned with ‘Speed of Darkness’ and with the evidence that they are the fine wine of folk-punk, becomes clearer and clearer.

This latest effort is a song short of a dozen, but doesn’t strike a poorly written chord or note along the way – the band have completely mastered what they do, and though if you’ve never been grabbed by the band before when you’ve listened, you’re unlikely to have a massive change of heart, this is as brilliant as anything they’ve ever written, and will no doubt entice a few to check out their back catalogue.

From drinking music to sombre and reflective musical poetry, and everything in between, and if there’s any doubt about just how brilliant Flogging Molly still are, then it’ll be expelled by this latest release.

Big tunes are ‘The Power’s Out’ and ‘A Prayer For Me in Silence’, but it’s a beefy album best enjoyed in whole – a must hear for any fan.
