I’m going to lay this pretty straight down the line and I’ll make no apologies for my opinion or the probable poor spelling. So here goes:
There’s no doubt Forever Falling will sell shitloads of records, start their own clothing line, support hundreds of UK and US acts at big venues, slay the toilet scene, get critically acclaimed by all the magazines, become poster boys in Kerrang! get their own tour bus and then (ALLEGEDLY) piss on a female fan. It’s not because they’re fantastic, write decent songs or because, y’know, they do something a little bit new. No, it’s because they’re the same fucking scene fad that gave us penknifelovelife and Bring Me The Horizon, two bands that, truth be told, aren’t absolutely horrendous, but believe so much of their own hype they’re creating a shitload of clone bands who believe they can cash in on what is nothing more than a fashion trend.
And yes kids, it is a fucking fashion trend. It’s not about the music anymore – why? Because it all sounds the fucking same. Forever Falling don’t have an original bone in their body, you can’t tell them apart from any one of the other fucking disgraces of a band that pollute venues across the country. What’s that? Riff, breakdown, scream, sing, riff, breakdown? How original! I’ve never heard that before! The fact that Forever Falling just rip off their contemporaries, who ripped off an entire generation of bands themselves, is probably bad enough. The fact they have a legion of 14,000 myspace ‘friends’ who seemingly lap this shit up makes me want to throttle the larger labels who continue to allow this bile to spew from our speakers.
I mean, where’s the quality control in these places? Why doesn’t someone go ‘actually Mr A&R, I know that band looks like five Oli Sykes all stood in a line, but they sound like shit?’ You won’t be surprised to read that, from the pics on their myspace page, at least half of the band have dark hair sweeping from their fringes into their eyes. How original. They’re pretty much all wearing black and their on-stage ‘moves’ are straight out of the ‘how to look generic and toss on stage 101’ book, written by myself.
I get a bee in my bonnet about any band who mercilessly rips off any other group. It’s cyclical – it happened when ska was big, it happened when pop-punk was big, it happened when New Jersey ’emo’ was big. Now it’s the turn of this shitty ‘hardcore’ toss. It’ll go away eventually. But what we don’t need is to encourage 20th generation horse wank like this to peddle out copies of what we heard two or three years ago. I saw PKLL and BMTH do this, what, three (ish) years ago? So why are bands still doing it? This EP is a mere copy of what bands have been doing for years. There are no redeeming features at all. It’s soulless, emotionless, has no sense of melody and follows every genre cliche you could possibly imagine.
Like Nirvana’s crusade against hair metal and Black Sabbath slaying the hippies – will someone please come and kill this fucking bullshit excuse for ‘music’?
