DIY as fuck and with an eye towards nicking every Lookout! Records cliché in the book, the Frigits‘ first EP is a slice of frenetic pop-punk in a photocopied, black and white sleeve that isn’t half bad. If, like me, you have never heard of this band until now, well they are 4 young kids from Ireland that have, admirably, flown in the face of popular current trends and just play like their favourite bands.
Its pretty intense stuff at time, this EP. The singer sounds as gruff as Jesse Michaels and the music is every bit, well, insert your favourite Hopeless/Lookout/Fearless records band here. At times I feel like the lad shouting is in danger of losing his voice completely, but this just wins marks for effort in my book.
It’s a bit too simple at times – noone, even Social Distortion or Screeching Weasel, can hold your attention too long with lengthy instrumental parts made up of 3 chords, but then the press release says this lot were going for 2 months when this got recorded, so let them off.
We need more bands like this in 2008, that’s for sure…
